Protect Your Home from Wildfire

Ready, Set, Go!

Each year, wildfires burn millions of acres, destroy hundreds of homes, and often grow faster than they can be suppressed. You must do all you can to make your home resistant to wildfires and prepare your family to leave early and safely. We call this process, “Ready, Set, Go!” (RSG!). In 2013, Decatur Fire Department joined the national "RSG!" program. This program helps fire departments teach homeowners how to best prepare themselves and their properties against wildfire threats. We have certified the department and some of our personnel as a training point for the program.

The RSG! program teaches residents to be:

  • Ready – Create defensible space by clearing brush away from your home. Use fire-resistant landscaping and harden your home with fire-safe construction measures. Assemble emergency supplies and belongings in a safe place. Plan escape routes and make sure all those residing within the home know the plan of action.
  • Set – Have situational awareness. Pack your emergency items. Stay aware of the latest news and information on the fire from local media, your local fire department and public safety information.
  • Go – Act early! Follow your personal wildland fire action plan. Doing so will not only support your safety, but will allow firefighters to best maneuver resources to combat the fire.
